Trek Overview

The Makalu Base Camp trek is one of the premier and off-the-beaten-path wilderness expeditions in the eastern region of Nepal. This trek spans from tropical river valleys to high-altitude glacial landscapes. We will begin with the scenic Tumlingtar flight from Kathmandu and continue with a rugged drive to Num. The foot journey will plunge deep into the hyperbiodiverse sanctuary of the Makalu Barun National Park.

The major attractions of this trek will be its raw, uncommercialized, and most authentic Himalayan experience. Mt. Makalu, which is also the fifth-highest peak in the world, will be looking at us with its gigantic south and north faces throughout the trek. We will traverse the dramatic Barun Valley and an enchanting paradise of massive granite cliffs and hanging glaciers alongside the roaring waterfalls. We will have a deep cultural immersion in the remote Sherpa and Rai Villages.

With all the rewards, the Makalu Base Camp Trek also poses some risks and challenges. The trek presents some substantial physical and logistical challenges. Unlike the commercially developed Everest and Annapurna routes, the Makalu Base Camp terrain features some great twists and turns and challenging steep sections along the way. We will cross the rigorously heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures. Shipton La Pass will expose trekkers to some of the sudden alpine weather shifts occasionally.

Apart from that, the risks of acute mountain sickness or altitude sickness can pose a great threat. We have two strict acclimatization days and side hikes scheduled so that coping with the risks will be easier. Alongside, the accommodation facilities in the upper valley are basic, seasonal stone shelters with minimal facilities. It remains a strenuous but highly rewarding trek of test and resilience.

Adventure Himalaya Nepal, with its expert services and experienced personnel, will provide you with the best services and a seamless Makalu Base Camp trekking experience. Join us today for one of the most authentic and off-the-beaten-path trails in Nepal.

Unlike many trekking routes, the Makalu Base Camp trek provides the raw and intimidating sight of the Himalayan giant. This is also an ultimate bucket-list destination for serious mountain photographers and trekkers alike.

The Multi-Peak Shipton La Pass Panoramic Vistas:

We will cross the formidable Shipton La Pass, which rewards the trekkers with the most expansive mountains in the entire Makalu Base Camp trekking route. We will stand on this high-altitude ridge, and we will be treated to sweeping views of Mt. Everest alongside Mt. Lhotse and Mt. Kanchenjunga. This visual masterpiece is unmatched by any other standard route.

The Glacially Sculpted Pristine Barun Valley:

Our walk through the enchanting Barun River Valley will feel like stepping into the prehistoric wilderness. We will be surrounded by the towering and sheer granite cliffs that rise thousands of feet into the sky. This deep alpine valley will feature cascading waterfalls and a massive glacial moraine. As a center point of the wilderness trek in Nepal, the valley’s floor will transition from a dense forest to the stark high-altitude masterpiece.

The Extreme Biodiversity of Makalu-Barun National Park:

The protected Makalu-Barun National Park will expose us to incredible ecological diversity. The trail will ascend through the distinct climate zone that starts from the subtropical river gorges. We will pass through the blooming rhododendron forests and misty bamboo. This rich habitat is also a unique sanctuary of rare Himalayan wildlife. If lucky, trekkers can catch a glimpse of the endangered, elusive red panda, musk deer, wild boar, and snow leopard.

Authentic Rai and Sherpa Cultural Immersion:

Makalu Base Camp trek is a remote itinerary that offers genuine cultural sightseeing in Nepal. We will pass through the isolated and traditional villages like Tashi Gaon and Sedua. These communities are settled by the Rai and Sherpa communities, who share some of the best cultures in Nepal. As this region sees very few tourists, the trekkers will experience authentic mountain hospitality and can explore the beauty of Buddhism in a very traditional way.

An Uncommercialized Off-the-Beaten-Path Wilderness Experience:

The Makalu Base Camp is a remote and isolated trek, but the definitive luxury of this journey is also the absolute solitude. This trek acts as a true off-the-beaten-path trek in Nepal. We will see only a few fellow trekkers, so we will have a peaceful transition between the landscapes. We will get to experience the full and deeply connect with the raw Himalayan wilderness. We will find a rare sense of quiet serenity and authentic mountain exploration in this journey.

Detailed 21-Day Makalu Base Camp Itinerary

Welcome to Nepal. After you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, our off-the-beaten-path adventure towards the Makalu Base Camp will begin. Today, we will rest and refresh while our staff prepares your travel documents and permits. This day will focus on trek preparation. Later today, we will have a briefing session with our trekking guide on the trek. The primary reward of this session will be getting basic information about the trek and trail. In the evening, we will have dinner together as we prepare for a journey into the remote Makalu Base Camp itinerary. Overnight in a Hotel.

We will have a preparation day or a buffer day for logistical management. Today features an essential trek briefing and preparation to review the most important gear, safety protocols, and Makalu Base Camp itinerary. Afterward, we will embark on a cultural tour of UNESCO World Heritage sites around Kathmandu Valley. This day will balance cultural sightseeing with practical organization and ensure our required trekking permits and gear are fully ready for the journey. Overnight in a hotel.

We will start the day early and take a scenic morning flight to Tumlingtar (5-6 hours total travel). We will be offered breathtaking aerial views of the Eastern Himalayas. Upon landing in the subtropical Arun Valley, we will transition to a local jeep. We will take a 3-4 hour drive to Num. Num will reward us with terraced fields, forests, and traditional Rai and Limbu villages. This will mark our first day of the off-the-beaten-path trekking experience that brings us to the gateway of the remote Makalu-Barun National Park. Overnight in a teahouse.

Our foot journey will begin today with a 5–6 hour trek from Num to Sedua. The trail will kick off on a steep and challenging descent through the bamboo groves. The rushing Arun River’s cascading sound will soothe our tiredness. After crossing a suspension bridge, we will begin a steady uphill climb to the village of Seduwa. This trekking day will introduce us to the remote region of Makalu. We will stay in a teahouse in Seduwa.

The 5-hour trek from Seduwa to Tashi Gaun today will feature a pleasant walk through the pristine buffers of Makalu-Barun National Park. We will traverse gently climbing ridges that pass charming farms and cardamom plants. Tashi Gaon is a prominent and cultural Sherpa Village. This is also the last permanent settlement on this route. We will have a chance to explore the Himalayan Cultural Immersion here. Overnight in a teahouse.

This will be a demanding day of trekking. This 6-hour trek will involve a significant elevation gain, which climbs steeply through beautiful rhododendron and oak forests. As we ascend, the lush greenery will transition into alpine terrain. We will tackle some stone staircases up the ridge to reach Kauma. We will reach Kauma and settle there in a basic teahouse facility.

This day is very important in our Makalu Base Camp Trek for altitude acclimatization strategy. We will take a rest day to allow our bodies to adjust to the rising altitude. We will take scenic side hikes to the higher ridges, such as Khongma La Viewpoint. This vantage point will offer us a stunning panorama of Makalu and Chamlang peaks. We will rest and hydrate today to ensure we will be physically prepared for tomorrow’s challenging crossing of the famous Shipton La Pass. Overnight in a teahouse.

We are heading towards the peak of this trek. Today, it will be a very exhilarating day as we will cross Shipton La Pass (4,170 m). This strenuous 6-7-hour trek will cross a series of magnificent passes like Ghungru La and the iconic Shipton La. We will hike past the sacred Kalo Pokhari lake while being surrounded by dramatic glacial landscapes. After conquering the summit, we will drop down towards the Barun River Valley. Overnight in a basic teahouse.

Our 6-hour trek from Dobate to Yangle Kharka today is a visually imperative journey. This journey will descend into the upper Valley Basin. We will walk through the mist-shrouded forests of rhododendron and pine. The massive granite cliffs and cascading waterfalls will make our journey rewarding. The trail will flatten out as we enter the alpine meadows of Yangle Kharka. This area will serve as a peaceful pasture for yaks and act as a key resting point for wilderness trekking in Nepal.

Our trek today will be a demanding one. This 7-8-hour journey deeper into the high alpine zone will be a great adventure. The trail climbs steadily alongside the moraine of Barun Glacier. The altitude gain will be significant, and the trees will disappear and be replaced by shrubs. Sherson is a lower base camp region of Makalu. It will provide us with spectacular close-up views of Mt. Makalu’s south face. Overnight in a basic teahouse of Sherson.

Our second acclimatization day at Sherson is essential for safety before we push to the maximum altitude of the trek. We will spend the day resting and enjoying alpine sightseeing around the glacial valley. Light hikes around the moraine will help our bodies to adjust to the high-altitude environment. This area will offer us a stark and beautiful landscape. This will be a dream location for Himalayan landscape photography. Overnight in a teahouse.

Our ultimate goal is realized during the trek from Sherson to Makalu Base Camp today. This 4-5 hour hike will take us to the rocky trails and lateral moraines on our journey. We will reach the base camp of the fifth-highest Makalu peak (8,485 m). The overwhelming Makalu north face will be right up towards us. Other major peaks in the show will be Everest and Lhotse. We will set up a camp and spend our overnight there.

We will spend an unforgettable day exploring the Makalu Base Camp for a great Himalayan amphitheater. We will have a free day to allow ourselves to hike towards the advanced base camp and visit the glacial lakes nearby for some of the best views of the surrounding peaks. We will take in the raw power of the avalanche chutes of Mt. Makalu. We will have a defining highlight of the adventure trek in Nepal today. Overnight in a camp.

We will bid farewell to the high Himalayas of the Makalu region and begin our return. This 4-5 hour journey back to Yangle Kharka will retrace our steps back down the Barun Valley glacier. Moving downhill to Yangle Kharka will mean we will have a faster descent. We will notice the air becoming thicker and easier to breathe with every mile. We will enjoy the changing perspectives of the valley walls. Overnight in a teahouse.

We will have a return journey that continues with a 4-5 hour trek from Yangle Kharka to Dobate today. We will follow the Barun River through dense forest. The trail today will feature a mix of ascents and descents through pristine alpine wilderness. We will arrive in Dobate, where you can rest and prepare for the Shipton La Pass crossing. Overnight in a teahouse.

We will call for a sustained physical effort on the 6-7 hour trek between Dobate and Kauma. We will retrace the route of Shipton La Pass. We will be rewarded with the giant panorama of Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, and neighboring peaks during our pass crossing. After crossing the high points and passing Kalo Pokhari once again, we will descend back to Kauma teahouse. Overnight in a teahouse.

Our trek from Kauma to Tashi Gaon will be a steep and speedy descent. Today, we will drop over 1500m in altitude, walking for about 4-5 hours. We will re-enter the lush bamboo and oak trees. As the air grows warm, our bodies will feel re-energized. We will arrive back at Tashi Gaon, a permanent settlement of this route, and enjoy a comfortable teahouse evening with more amenities than before. Overnight in a teahouse.

This will be our final trekking day. We will undertake a 4-5 hour descent and ascent through the village of Sedua. We will have a final stretch of descent over the Arun River, and the last steep hill will climb us back to Num. Completing this loop back to Num will mark the end of our trek. The challenging Makalu Base Camp trail was completed today. We will have a celebratory moment. Overnight in a teahouse.

We will swap our trekking boots for a vehicle on a bumpy road towards Tumlingtar. The rough mountain road will wind us back down through the lush landscapes of Arun Valley. We will arrive in Tumlingtar, where we will check into a local lodge and take a long-overdue hot shower. We will also celebrate the completion of the rugged Makalu trek with the guiding team and crew. Overnight in a lodge.

We will board a morning flight back to Kathmandu (1400m), enjoying a final look at the snow-capped Himalayan peaks from your window. After landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will transfer directly to your hotel. The rest of the afternoon is yours for last-minute souvenir shopping in Thamel or relaxing at a café. In the evening, we will gather for a celebratory farewell dinner to mark the end of your Nepal trekking holiday. Overnight in a hotel.

Makalu Base Camp Trek: Accommodation Logistics

The Makalu Base Camp Trek used to be an all-camping trek for a long time. However, in modern days, the strict camping expedition has transitioned into a hybrid trek where we will have both camping and teahouse accommodation. The remote and higher regions have predominantly rustic and rudimentary teahouses. In such a case, we have to use camping for our safety and convenience.

  • Phase 1 (Days 1–5): Stable village teahouses and local guest houses from Kathmandu to Tashi Gaon.
  • Phase 2 (Days 6–7): Stone ridge teahouses are available in Kauma, where dropped temperatures demand camping.
  • Phase 3 (Days 8–15): Teahouses in this phase are very primitive and less facilitated. The critical Upper Barun Valley and Makalu Base Camp require camping if overcrowded.
  • Phase 4 (Days 16–21): Descending via permanent settlements back to Kathmandu.

The Choice: As a trekker and our esteemed guest, you are free to choose the basic teahouse accommodation or a Camping/Hybrid Package. The pitched tents during the high-altitude phases will help in bypassing freezing shelters, while teahouse accommodation means you have to cope with such circumstances.

What are the Best Seasons for the Makalu Base Camp Trek?

Spring Season (March to May)

The spring trekking season is one of the very finest trekking seasons in Nepal. The Makalu region turns into a vibrant and living canvas in this trek. Lasting from March to May, the temperatures rise, and the daylight increases, so it will be a perfect window to travel to the remote regions like Makalu Base Camp. The lower trails come alive as the Makalu-Barun National Park blooms into different shades of rhododendron and other wildflowers. Days will be comfortably warm and make the challenging high-altitude ascents much more bearable. The winter’s lingering snow may make crossing a bit difficult, but the overall experience will be fantastic and one to remember. The clear morning skies will offer unobstructed views of Mt. Makalu.

Autumn Season (September to November)

The autumn season is widely considered the gold standard of trekking in Nepal. The autumn window, which continues from September to November, will provide us with the most stable weather conditions and the sharpest visibility of them all. After the conclusion of the monsoon, the atmosphere is completely washed clean of dust and pollution. This results in a daily and crystal-clear panorama of Mt. Makalu, Mt. Everest, and Lhotse. The trails are dry, and the volatile high-altitude mountain passes are highly accessible. While the autumn season brings crisp and cool daytime temperatures, nights at higher altitudes often dip below freezing levels. However, autumn in Nepal is the premier choice for those who want to celebrate clear views and a photography jewel. On top of that, festivals like Dashain and Tihar add a vibrant environment.

What is the Difficulty of the Makalu Base Camp trek?

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is one of the challenging treks in Nepal. This route is also classified as a strenuous and challenging expedition, which is suited best for experienced trekkers. The difficulty stems from continuous elevation shifts and stone staircases. The rugged glacier terrain will make this trek even more difficult. Shipton La Pass will also expose the hikers to unpredictable alpine weather and sub-zero temperatures. We will reach the highest altitude of 4870m, which can pose a significant risk of altitude sickness.

Essential Remedies for a Successful Trek

  • The trekker has to engage in intense cardio exercises, leg strength, and weighted stair climbing at least 2-3 months before the scheduled trekking date.
  • The trekker should never skip the scheduled acclimatization days even if they are feeling good to go.
  • Trekking with a professional guide and crew will ensure safe navigation, provide crucial safety logistics, and lighten your physical burden, too.
  • A trekker must drink at least 4 litres of water daily and focus on a high-carb diet to fuel the body.
  • Protect yourself with premium high-altitude gear. We recommend buying heavy-duty and broken-in trekking boots and a certified sleeping bag(available with Adventure Himalaya Nepal).

Guides and Porters

A trusted travel company like Adventure Himalaya Nepal will provide you with a safe and comfortable ride by pairing you with a highly experienced and government-licensed Himalayan trekking guide. The guide will be accompanied by elite and strong porters.

Your Api Himal Base Camp Trek will be accompanied and led by the guide, who will be fluent in English, certified in wilderness first aid, and deeply knowledgeable about the local Doteli and Bhotia culture. They will manage daily logistics, check safety protocols, and monitor the trekker closely for the symptoms of acute mountain sickness.

The local porters handle the heavy luggage. They will safely transport your baggage between the Camps. They will be carrying all the required logistics and tents for our overnight tented camp stay. This essential logistical support will provide you with complete relaxation in the challenging high-altitude support required for safe navigation in the rugged Himalayas.

Food and Culture

The cultural tapestry of the Makalu Base Camp route is a transitioning landscape from the lowlands to the high alpine zones. The lower section is inhabited by the indigenous Rai and Limbu communities, while the upper region is dominated by the Sherpa people. This cultural shift is marked by the Buddhist prayer flags and old stone chortens lining the path.

The local cuisine on this remote route focuses on organic, vegetarian, and carb-dense food. The undisputed staple is Dal Bhat, which is considered a very nutritious platter of carbohydrates and energy. Other sample foods in the Himalayas are Tsampa(roasted barley flour), yak cheese, and warming Tibetan noodle soups. To combat the biting mountain chill, locals frequently offer Tongba, a traditional, fermented millet beverage served hot in wooden storage.

Why is Travel Insurance Required

While travelling to a foreign country, you must have comprehensive travel insurance. For treks like Makalu Base Camp, the importance of travel Insurance escalates. In this trek, we will travel to about 4870m and cross the volatile Shipton La Pass(4170m). The risk of altitude sickness, sudden injuries, and unpredictable weather delays is very high. There is no road connectivity or well-equipped hospitals in the upper Barun Valley. If a medical emergency or severe altitude sickness strikes, the only way of emergency medical response will be a helicopter evacuation back to Kathmandu. In such a case, helicopter evacuation and hospital bills can be as large as 5-7000 USD. That’s why you must purchase a policy that explicitly includes high-altitude trekking coverage up to 5000m and ensures 24/7 medical airlift and hospital care.

FAQs

The Makalu Base Camp trek is classified as a strenuous trekking route. The trails are not well-graded, commercially not managed, and there are primitive-type teahouses. We also have to walk on the longer days on a remote and rustic high-altitude trek. Makalu Base Camp trek demands good fitness and experience.

Yes. For the trekking adventures inside the premises of Makalu-Barun National Park, it is completely necessary to hire a licensed trekking guide. Adventure Himalaya Nepal will help you get the most experienced trekking guide and porter team who can manage all the logistics and emergency protocols.

We will reach the highest altitude of 4870m at Makalu Base Camp during our Makalu Base Camp Trek. There are a few optional hikes that may cross the 5000m mark, but the official overnight altitude will be 4870m at Makalu Base Camp.

The Makalu Base Camp route is currently in a hybrid infrastructure phase. As the facilities are increasing year by year, currently there are basic teahouses. During the peak climbing and trekking seasons, these teahouses will fill up completely. That's why, taking the safe side, many trekking groups carry backup tents or run this trek as a camping trek.

To access the Makalu Base Camp trek, the two mandatory documents have to be obtained. Makalu-Barun National Park Entry Permit and Trekkers’ Information Management System are the two permits. Adventure Himalaya Nepal, as your travel partner, will acquire these permits as part of the package.

The best time to trek to the Makalu Base Camp is mainly two seasons: the spring season for lush Himalayan beauty and rhododendron blooms. The autumn season is famous for stable weather and high-definition visibility.

Because the trail is highly isolated, food options are simple, locally sourced, and focused on pure carbohydrate fuel. The undisputed staple is Dal Bhat (lentil soup, steamed rice, and organic mountain vegetables), which features free refills to keep your energy up. You will also find basic Tibetan noodle soups (Thukpa), fried potatoes, porridge, egg dishes, and hot Tsampa (roasted barley). Tap water along the route is untreated, making it absolutely vital to pack water purification tablets or a UV filtration device.

Connectivity during our Makalu Base Camp trek is incredibly scarce; the cellular network signals of NTC and Ncell are reliable up to Tashi Gaon, but will disappear upwards. There is no internet facility in the teahouses, so we recommend that you prepare for a digital detox during the trekking days.

A trekker must purchase a specialized travel insurance policy while trekking in Nepal. Your travel insurance must cover high-altitude trekking up to 5000 meters and emergency helicopter evacuation for the Makalu Base Camp Trek.

Your physical fitness should be functional for the Makalu Base Camp Trek. You must start with inclined treadmill cardio at about 15 degrees, inclined stair climbing, running, alongside specific leg exercises like squats, leg press, and leg extension. You are recommended to hike with a 5-8 kg backpack as a real-life simulation.
