The Langtang Valley and Gosainkunda Lake Trek is one of the premier 15-day odysseys in Nepal. This trek combines wild glacial valleys, sacred alpine lakes, and vibrant Tamang culture. We will begin with a drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. The trail will climb through Langtang National Park and follow the rushing glacial rivers through oak, bamboo, and rhododendron forests. This land is a sanctuary for the rare, endangered red panda.
As the tree line recedes, we will be rewarded with the wide alpine valley and stunning visuals. We will have a stunning panorama of Langtang Lirung and surrounding peaks from Tserko Ri(4984m). This viewpoint will provide us with unmatched views and picturesque moments.
The Langtang Valley and Gosainkunda Lake Trek is moderate in challenge. This 15-day Himalayan adventure will start in Syabrubesi and end at Sundarijal. We will have a perfect loop of three different trekking routes. We will touch down on the Langtang, Gosainkunda, and Helambu circuit trekking routes. We will stay in cozy and comfortable teahouses along the route. Some teahouses will provide more than basic amenities like hot showers and single rooms.
For the best experience, we should embark on this trek during Spring(March-May) and Autumn(Sep-Nov). However, during the full moon of August, Gosainkunda Lake hosts one of the biggest carnivals on the auspicious day of Janai Purnima. Food during the Trek?
Along the Langtang Valley and Gosainkunda Lake Trek, local teahouses provide a carb-heavy, nutritious diet. The menu will be a mix of hearty Nepali, Tibetan, and basic Western dishes. The major staple is high-energy Dal Bhat(rice, lentil soup, seasonal curry, and pickles. This will be offered with free refills. The other major staples are Tibetan bread, porridge, chapatti, pancakes, and eggs accompanied by hot ginger-lemon-honey tea or coffee. Other menus feature momo, thukpa, fried rice, chowmein, pasta, and garlic soup to aid acclimatization. At the high elevations like Kyanjin Gompa, one can sample fresh local yak cheese as well. In the remote sections like Langtang National Park and Gosainkunda, road access is non-existent. Modern medical facilities are also not available in this region. For emergency medical response, helicopter evacuation is the only option we are left with. Such emergency helicopter evacuations often cost about 4000-6500 USD out of pocket. So having comprehensive travel insurance that covers trekking up to 5000m is a wise idea. A robust policy also safeguards against trip cancellations, weather delays, and lost luggage.
FAQs
Yes. A licensed trekking guide is a mandatory requirement for the Langtang Valley and Gosainkunda Trek as per the regulations by the Nepal Tourism Board. Independent trekking without a registered guide is strictly banned. This initiative is enforced to ensure maximum trekking safety and rapid response during emergencies in the Himalayas.
Trekkers will require three mandatory permits for this combined route. The permits include Langtang National Park Entry Permit, TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System), and Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park Permit.
Tap water and natural stream water are not recommended for drinking during the Langtang Valley and Gosainkunda Lake trek. We should use reusable water bottles for water consumption. You need to have a water purification tablet or a reliable filter. Plastic bottled mineral water is not recommended as they are harmful to the environment. Water normally can be refilled at teahouses for free.
Mobile Connectivity along the Langtang Valley and Gosainkunda Lake Trek is sparse. The network is generally available till Kyanjin Gompa and lower Gosainkunda. We will depend on teahouse wi-fi. After the devastating earthquake of 2015, there have been a lot of developmental works, and now the trail hosts one of the most upgraded teahouse accommodations. Trail routes were rerouted and secured by local authorities and foreign engineering teams.
Janai Purnima is a sacred Hindu festival that is held during the full moon of August. Gosainkunda hosts one of the biggest festivals at Gosainkunda Lake to bathe in its waters and pay homage to Lord Shiva. Trekking during this time will offer trekkers a deep sense of cultural immersion. However, spontaneous trekking can result in not finding a teahouse to sleep in.
