The Jamacho Gumba Hike is one of the most rewarding short hikes around Kathmandu. Located inside Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, this peaceful jungle trail offers a perfect nature escape just a few kilometers away from the city center.

Rising to an altitude of 2,130 meters, Jamacho Hill is home to a serene Buddhist shrine and monastery. The summit is adorned with fluttering prayer flags and offers 360 degree views of lush valleys, rolling hills, and some snow capped Himalayan peaks.

Your adventure begins with a short drive from Thamel to Phulbari Gate (near Balaju Bypass), the starting point of the hike.

You need to buy the entrance ticket at the counter of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. On weekends, the ticket counter and the trail can be quite crowded, so it’s better to carry sufficient cash for the ticket payment.

As you enter the protected forest, the sounds of the city fade away, replaced by birdsong and the whisper of rustling leaves.

After a steady 2.5-hour uphill hike, you’ll reach the Jamacho viewpoint, where the stunning panorama and peaceful ambiance invite quiet reflection. You can taste some Chatpatey (Nepalese spicy snacks) there, but they might be a little more expensive.

After exploring the stupa and taking photos of the mesmerizing landscapes and some views from tower, you’ll descend back along the same route reaching the base in about 2 hours.

This is an ideal hike for travelers with limited time in Kathmandu who wish to experience Nepal’s natural beauty without venturing far from the capital. The full trip completes comfortably within 6–7 hours.
